PROGRAMS AT MUSIC ON MAIN

Mommy and Me Classes

2-3 Year Olds

In the past, we have recommended to parents to wait until their child is 6 years old to start piano lessons. However, there is so much opportunity for children to learn and develop through music at a younger age. We have created a curriculum that encapsulates the development of the whole child through music. This program applies to 2 and 3-year-old children and helps prepare them for private lessons at age 6.

  • Rhythm through Whole Body Movement

    Social Skills

    Fine Motor Skills

    • What age: 2 and 3 year olds (and their guardian)

    • Where: Music on Main (103 East Main Street Danville, KY 40422)

    • Price: The price per class per child is $35 (pay per class).

  • This is a music and movement class, so we will spend 30 minutes going through different songs that develop rhythm through full body movement, listening comprehension, distinguishing soft and loud sounds, etc. The last 15 minutes will be spent developing and stimulating fine motor skills!

    Rhythm through Whole Body Movement

It is important when teaching a child rhythm to help them feel it throughout their entire body. We will learn songs that will teach the child to stomp their feet, clap their hands, play on instruments, use shakers on the beat, improvise dances with colorful scarves, etc. We will also learn musical dynamics (the levels of loud and soft) through gestures. (This will also incorporate receptive language as the child learns to listen to specific instructions in songs and perform the required actions).

    Social Skills

After being so isolated during Covid, I LOVE that the children have consistent opportunities to be around other children. Everything is done as a group (even our behavior marble jar is a team effort!), so there are plenty of opportunities for the children to learn awareness of other children in taking turns and sharing, and also working together to make music!

    Fine Motor Skills

Piano is one of the best things for children to do to improve fine motor skills. We will fuse time at the piano with other activities to strengthen their little fingers and coordination.

    Language: Expressive and Receptive

This section encourages the child to use their words to describe or explain something, but also take in information and apply it. We will read stories about classical composers and discuss the images on the pages. We will also have coloring pages and/or activities that relate to that month’s composer.

  • I use a curriculum called Faber Piano Adventures: My First Piano Adventure for the Young Beginner. I have found this to be the most successful for this age (and also SO much fun!) in teaching technique and the basics of the piano. This sets them up tremendously well for private lessons at age 6!

    Right and Left Brain Development

The brain is split into two hemispheres that have distinct functions and process information in totally different ways. The left brain (the “logical” side of the brain) handles reading, writing, and calculations. The right brain is more visual and intuitive, dealing in images more than words. In music, both sides of the brain play an important role. The left side of the brain tries to analytically understand the structure of the piece and what motor skills are needed to accomplish playing it. The right side focuses on the melody and harmonies of the piece.

PIANO LESSONS

6+ years old

There are 3 things that we believe provides the child with a well-rounded musical education: classical music, creativity/creative music, and technical exercises. While it is important to learn technique and musicality from classical music, I am passionate about giving the child a diverse education through creative avenues (for example, a child’s favorite Disney song, or learning the difference in jazz styles and their often complicated rhythms). Learning technical exercises will advance their abilities to play these different genres and levels of piano music.
