PROGRAMS AT MUSIC ON MAIN

Mommy and Me Classes

2-3 Year Olds

In the past, I have recommended to parents to wait until their child is 6 years old to start piano lessons. However, there is so much opportunity for children to learn and develop through music at a younger age. I have created a curriculum that encapsulates the development of the whole child through music. This program applies to 2-5 year old children and helps prepare them for private lessons at age 6.

  • Rhythm through Whole Body Movement

    Social Skills

    Fine Motor Skills

    Language: Expressive and Receptive

  • Days and Times

What age: 2 and 3 year olds (and their guardian)

    How long: 45 minutes

How often: Every other week Wednesdays (contact me for availability)

    What time: 11-11:45am

Where: Music on Main (103 East Main Street Danville, KY 40422)

    Price

The price per week per child is $30. You will pay me monthly (so $60 a month for 2 classes).

  • This is a music and movement class, so we will spend 30 minutes going through different songs that develop rhythm through full body movement, listening comprehension, distinguishing soft and loud sounds, etc. The last 15 minutes will be spent developing and stimulating fine motor skills!

    Rhythm through Whole Body Movement

It is important when teaching a child rhythm to help them feel it throughout their entire body. We will learn songs that will teach the child to stomp their feet, clap their hands, play on instruments, use shakers on the beat, improvise dances with colorful scarves, etc. We will also learn musical dynamics (the levels of loud and soft) through gestures. (This will also incorporate receptive language as the child learns to listen to specific instructions in songs and perform the required actions).

    Social Skills

After being so isolated during Covid, I LOVE that the children have consistent opportunities to be around other children. Everything is done as a group (even our behavior marble jar is a team effort!), so there are plenty of opportunities for the children to learn awareness of other children in taking turns and sharing, and also working together to make music!

    Fine Motor Skills

Piano is one of the best things for children to do to improve fine motor skills. We will fuse time at the piano with other activities to strengthen their little fingers and coordination.

    Language: Expressive and Receptive

This section encourages the child to use their words to describe or explain something, but also take in information and apply it. We will read stories about classical composers and discuss the images on the pages. We will also have coloring pages and/or activities that relate to that month’s composer.

My First Piano Adventure

  • I use a curriculum called Faber Piano Adventures: My First Piano Adventure for the Young Beginner. I have found this to be the most successful for this age (and also SO much fun!) in teaching technique and the basics of the piano. This sets them up tremendously well for private lessons at age 6!

    Right and Left Brain Development

The brain is split into two hemispheres that have distinct functions and process information in totally different ways. The left brain (the “logical” side of the brain) handles reading, writing, and calculations. The right brain is more visual and intuitive, dealing in images more than words. In music, both sides of the brain play an important role. The left side of the brain tries to analytically understand the structure of the piece and what motor skills are needed to accomplish playing it. The right side focuses on the melody and harmonies of the piece.

PIANO LESSONS

6+ years old

There are 3 things that I believe provides the child with a well-rounded musical education: classical music, creativity/creative music, and technical exercises. While it is important to learn technique and musicality from classical music, I am passionate about giving the child a diverse education through creative avenues (for example, a child’s favorite disney song, or learning the difference in jazz styles and their often complicated rhythms). Learning technical exercises will advance their abilities to play these different genres and levels of piano music.

  • Piano is usually such an individualistic “sport”. After covid, I realized the importance and need for kids to have shared experiences with other kids. These group classes will provide the child with a sense of community. The group classes will take place at the last week of every month (replacing private lessons for that week). Each month, I will choose a snack or drink theme that fits the month (ex. Grinch kabobs for December). Some months, we will spend time for each child to play a song they have worked on that month (not perfect or recital ready) and have time for positive feedback. This instills confidence in the child and it also gives them a sense of pride for the hard work they have done. This is also an excellent practice motivator;) The last thing that I will focus on is reiterating things that the child may or may not be clear on. We will spend time getting quicker at naming their notes, recognizing intervals, developing their ear, learning new dynamics and musicality. Each month will have a new “topic” that we will discuss and understand at a deeper level than time allows in private lessons.

    Days and Times

    How long: 1-hour
How often: The last week of each month
What time: 4:30pm on your normal lesson day (This will REPLACE the child’s private lesson for that week. If you cannot come on your normal lesson day to the 4:30pm group class, message me on Remind and I can add your child to another day’s group that fits your schedule. However, all the group classes will be the last week of each month at 4:30pm no matter the day.)

If you are homeschooling your children and would like to have your group class during the day (near your normal lesson time) reach out to me. If there is enough interest, we can make that happen.

    Groups

I will split the kids up into groups of 10 depending on the amount of kids.

    Price

The price will be the same as the lesson: $25

Example for 1 child: You will pay $100 for the month. This includes 3 private lessons and a group lesson.

Example for 2 children: You will pay $200 for the month to include 3 private lessons per child and a group lesson for them both).

  • Recitals bring the community together to celebrate our kids’ hard work. It also encourages the students to push past their fears and have confidence to play in front of people. I have 2 recitals per year: one right before Christmas and one in the Spring.
